In a recent survey of more than 500 online marketers, SEO was touted as the number one source of leads for both B2C and B2B marketers, beating both PPC and social media marketing. About two-thirds of all respondents identified themselves as B2B marketers with the remainder identifying themselves as B2C marketers.

Both groups agreed that SEO has the biggest impact on their company's lead generation, with 57% of B2B marketers and 41% of B2C marketers crediting SEO as their primary source of lead generation.

Both marketing groups stated that website traffic is the primary way they measure the success of online marketing efforts, with brand awareness at the bottom of the list.

The survey also asked questions related to budget allocation: 33% of B2B marketers indicated SEO receives the majority share of their budget with B2C companies stating PPC receives the majority.

In addition, 60% of marketers said they plan to spend more for social media marketing in 2012; while 53% plan to spend more on SEO and 40% will spend more on PPC.

Finally, 68% say they've generated leads from Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter and 55% have closed sales from social media leads.
